| Jamison, Wizards jolt Raptors in overtime
Andray Blatche did a fine job filling in for an injured Caron Butler, and he got plenty of help from Antawn Jamison and others, as the Washington Wizards beat the Toronto Raptors 108-104 on Tuesday night. Blatche had 19 points and eight rebounds in only his second start of the season, and Jamison finished with 24 points and 20 rebounds, leading the Wizards to an overtime victory. Antawn Jamison takes a shot in Tuesday's 108-104 Wizards win. (M. B. Ceneta/Associated Press) Chris Bosh led the way with 37 points and 12 rebounds for the Raptors, who trailed by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter. Anthony Parker's high-arching three-pointer curled into the net as the regulation buzzer sounded, forcing the extra period. It was only Washington's fifth victory in 21 games without Butler over the past two seasons.
Griz focus on playing through adversity
We all get that way but we can't stay that way. The message here is you need to play hard. You need to play through adversity. Right now, we've got some adversity, especially at home." Overall, Memphis has dropped 10 of 12 games and that malaise included a six-game losing streak. The Grizzlies play host to the Houston Rockets tonight, having lost six of their past seven in FedExForum. The Rockets mark the ninth and final visitor this month, but the Griz have hardly felt the comforts of home. They've blown big leads. They've lost close games. Their offense has looked inept for long stretches. Occasionally, the Grizzlies' defense is better than porous; otherwise they'd be the Washington Generals. In short, the Griz, even at home, have struggled to find consistency.
Monday wild card
I try to keep up with the blog, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend to know what I'm talking about when it comes to Gozzer Ranch yacht wars or Marty Fortier. I'm doing this in addition to other work, so I'm not able to spend much time crusing around looking for things to post. And so - your help this week is crucial to keeping the blog flowing. Don't be shy about suggesting items to post, and please don't worry about insulting my intelligence or whatever by explaining at length why a particular post is noteworthy. This is your community, after all. Drop me a line at kenp@spokesman.com. Portrait of DFO courtesty of Brodh2o. .
Epilepsy Hospitalizations Rise After 8-Year Decline, USA
Epilepsy-related hospitalizations, which fell from 176,000 in 1993 to 95,000 in 2000, climbed to 136,000 in 2005, according to the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The recent 5-year climb represented a 43 percent increase. Epilepsy, a condition characterized by recurrent seizures that may include repetitive muscle jerking called convulsions, affects 1 to 2 percent of the U.S. population. AHRQ's analysis also showed: - Nearly two-thirds of the patients hospitalized with epilepsy between 2000 and 2005 were younger than 45. - Between 1993 and 2005, convulsion-related hospitalizations increased 69 percent from 730,000 to 1.2 million. Patients 65 and older were more than twice as likely as younger people to be hospitalized with convulsions.
A VISIT TO THE HOLEY LAND
Fifteen residents of Cambridge, Massachusetts, formed a people-to-people delegation to Bethlehem, that "little town" of legend and current West Bank reality for five days in late November 2007, with a day in Jerusalem before and after. What follows is my impressions of this trip. Those who care about Palestinian rights may find some useful observations. I hope that those who care mainly about Israel will read on and perhaps come to agree that present policies are no better, in the long run, for Israel than they are for Palestine, and that a resolution that is good for Palestine will also benefit Israel. .
Sleep disorders center can help you get your ZZZZZZ
Do you spend your days yawning, even though you're not burning the candle at both ends? If you sleep through alarms, and nod off during meetings, it could mean you are in the majority of folks who feel sleep-deprived. In a recent Sleep in America poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, about two-thirds of Americans say they don't sleep well at least three nights a week. And most are getting less than seven hours sleep each night. Sentara Obici's Sleep Disorders Center can be a source of help. The center opened in 1991. Since then, thousands of patients have been treated at the center, which has four beds, said Leah Pixley, coordinator of the center. Sentara operates five of 11 sleep centers statewide that are accredited by the American Academy of Sleep.
