Want to advertise your business online? Beware of click fraud

PORTLAND, Ore. - Click fraud has been called the dark side of online advertising, a type of Internet crime aimed at running up bills and cutting down the competition - one click at a time.

Every time you use Google or Yahoo, there are always links at the top of the list for sponsored sites and they do not pop up there by mistake.

Business owners pay for those links. It's called pay-per-click advertising and for many small businesses, it's a great way to attract new business.

However, there is a down side.

Scott Hendison used pay-per-click advertising for an insurance business.

One day, he noticed his bill was increasing, but there was no increase in actual leads. Someone had been fraudulently clicking on his ad and running up his bill, with no intent on using his services.

Travel agency makes BBB 'Dirty Dozen' list 7:07 AM

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Last year, consumers filed more than 14,000 complaints with the Better Business Bureau in Charlotte against businesses across the southern Piedmont. And some of the names, you've heard before.

We first told you about accusations against Sonshine Tours and Travel out of Mooresville back in August.

Dozens of people e-mailed and called us, saying they paid for trips that were later cancelled but never got their money back. Now, the agency is on the BBB's newly released "Dirty Dozen" list.

Overall, the company's former owner, Steve Young, is accused of stealing $650,000 from more than 400 customers.

Detectives say they've turned the case over to the U.S. Attorney's office. The FBI is also working hard to build a federal against the man we exposed.

Bettman: 15 years as NHL commissioner

It was his first week on the job in 1993 as an executive at the NHL's head office in New York. Burke entered the men's washroom to find first-year commissioner Gary Bettman picking up scraps of paper from a messy floor.

When Burke reminded Bettman that a maintenance person would be in later in the day to clean up, Bettman had no interest in leaving the mess for someone else.

"I tell Gary 'We pay someone to do this'," Burke recalled Thursday.

"He responds angrily, 'And when do they start work?' I say, I don't know - 6 p.m.' He responds, 'And until then, every guest, every sponsor, every vendor, every owner, and any and all club personnel will use this restroom. And it WILL be neat and clean."

Local economists weigh in on economic climate

PARKERSBURG — While the Federal Reserve has reacted to signs of a U.S. economic recession by slicing the prime lending rate, one local economist says more needs to be done. “There are clearly some challenges facing the U.S. economy," said Greg Delemeester, Ph.D. microeconomist at Marietta College. Delemeester says his school of interest is focusing on a particular industry or business sector. However, Delemeester said his reading of other economists' work leads him to believe there's a good possibility the U.S. economy is heading for a recession. “The probability of a U.S. recession is 50 percent if not growing," he said. Sy Sarkarat, Ph.D. and professor of economics at WVU-P, said the reality is the a deep economic slowdown will affect millions. “As the economy slows down there will be less jobs both domestically and worldwide," he said.
