Beware of car warranty scams

Post cards and automated phone calls are flooding the state with warnings of potential problems with your car.The messages are designed to get quick response by making you worry. "They were telling me my car warranty expired and that I had to take action immediately," said Carol Garza.Out-of-state warranty companies are filling mail boxes, and flooding phone lines.Carol got a cell phone call at 4 o'clock in the morning and two more calls at work."I don't know where they're getting my phone numbers," she said. I first sounded alert last fall when an 80-year-old Seattle woman got a card and doesn't even own a car.I called the number on her card and learned the consumer lists are generated by businesses that have access to vehicle registration data. The companies are located all over the country, but most are in Missouri.According to the Missouri Better Better Business Bureau, there are more than 100 auto warranty processors operating in that state alone. The Missouri BBB says auto vehicle processors generate the third highest number of complaints in that region, and many of the companies have unsatisfactory records. The company that called me gave a ball park estimate of $600 a year for a bumper-to-bumper policy.

For Local/B2B, Organic May Be Better Than PPC

It can be especially difficult for business-to-business companies and brick-and-mortar stores to stand out in search results, especially if their relying on local results or paid listings. The answer to that, of course, is good (old fashioned?) SEO.

Galen De Young, managing director of Francis SEO, says research suggests b2b customers overwhelmingly ignore PPC ads in favor of organic listings. That and local search often fails to present businesses that serve a larger area than just their home base, or also nearby cities.

The second issue, where lists of service areas are often incomplete or inadequately promoted, is not properly addressed by alternative geocentric search concepts based on mapping. Listings still appear for the home office area only, even though business is done outside of it.

ORU's spokesman Jeremy Burton confirmed Wednesday that Dollar had resigned and that Hinn had been named a "regent emeritus" without a vote on the board.

Both refused last week to respond to a Senate inquiry into lavish spending by evangelists.

A Canadian businessman, Richard Pearson, has been named to ORU's board of business regents.

Vassallo leads Virginia Tech past Florida State, 89-80

The blowout that almost got too close for comfort turned into a win-win for Virginia Tech: they managed to hold on, and learned a lesson.

A.D. Vassallo scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half and Virginia Tech opened the game with an 18-4 run and kept mistake-prone Florida State well behind until the Seminoles got hot but came up short in the Hokies 89-80 victory Tuesday night.

"We learned that we've got to stay down," freshman point guard Hank Thorns said. "We can't just relax when we've got a big lead. We've got to keep going at them."

The Hokies (13-8, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), coming off a road victory at Boston College on Saturday, led 42-24 at the half and by no fewer than 11 for most of the second half before the Seminoles started making 3-points from all over.
