Silverados set to face former teammate

McALLEN — The Rio Grande Valley Silverados begin arguably their most important stretch of the season at 7:35 tonight when they play host to the East Kentucky Miners. To begin the stretch in which 10 of their next 12 games are at the McAllen Convention Center, they have to overcome a former player who likely will have revenge on his mind. Mike Dean, who leads the CBA in scoring at 24.5 points per game, returns to town for the first time since being traded by the Silverados earlier this month as RGV prepares for a stretch in which it plays 10 of its next 12 at home. Silverados forward Toby Smith, who was selected to the National Conference All-Star team earlier this week, expects Dean to be ready to fill it up tonight and Saturday when the teams play again. "It’s going to be a real exciting game," said Smith, who averages 17.2 points per game.

Ben Bernanke: Supernanny?

We all know the story of the "nanny state." That is what conservatives call a government that ensures people have basic necessities like decent childcare and decent health care. Conservatives deride the idea the government should have to provide such services to people, because people really should be able to look out for themselves. In the view of conservatives, people don't need the government to act like a nanny to ensure they are protected.

If a government that acts to protect ordinary people can be dubbed a "nanny state," then a government that protects the superrich certainly deserves the title of a "super nanny state," making its top officials "supernannies." The question for the moment is whether Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke now qualifies as a "supernanny."

His immediate claim to this title stems from his decision to have an emergency cut of 0.75 percentage points in the Federal Reserve Board's overnight loan rate.

McCain hits paydirt in Golden state

With Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger set to endorse Sen. John McCain Thursday in Los Angeles, and with the boost of a powerful new endorsement from Rudy Giuliani, the Arizona senator built up a head of steam going into Tuesday's primary in California - a turn of events more than evident Wednesday at the Reagan Presidential Library.

McCain sat on the stage with three other Republican presidential candidates in the last televised debate before the 22 Super Tuesday primaries. Appearing confident and in command, McCain battled with his chief competitor, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, repeatedly suggesting that as a "foot soldier" in the army of Ronald Reagan, he was the most qualified and ready to assume the former president's mantle.

McCain and Romney sparred on issues ranging from housing and economics to the war in Iraq during the CNN debate, sniping at each other as they were joined by former Arkansas Gov.
