Super Tuesday Primer
On the GOP side, Arizona Sen. John McCain, coming off a crucial Florida win last Tuesday, hopes to roll his current momentum into an irresistible force that overwhelms former Govs. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, his top two remaining rivals. On the Democratic side, Sens. Hillary Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois are looking for momentum-grabbing wins in what is now a two-candidate battle. And both campaigns are aggressively pursuing voters and activists who were aligned with former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards before he suspended his campaign last week. "For Republicans, Super Tuesday may be the beginning of the end. For Democrats, it may only be the end of the beginning," said John Pitney, a political science professor at Claremont McKenna College in California.
Test looms large for Conservative ethnic-outreach strategy
The federal Conservatives have rolled out the red carpet for Gregory Hong. A Korean businessman in Toronto's Willowdale riding, Mr. Hong is a member of the party's newly formed Community Relations Council, which is aimed at giving ethnic communities a direct voice to Tory political leaders. And since last year, he says, the Conservatives have been reaching out actively to his community. He says he speaks directly to Secretary of State for Multiculturalism Jason Kenney, and last year he was invited to Ottawa by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty. Mr. Hong says he will be working hard to bring out the Korean vote in a March 17 by-election. "I believe the Korean vote is going to be an untapped vote and swayed to any party depending on which party puts more effort in it, and we have a pretty good presence in there," he said.
Denial of Due Process to Muslims Disgraces Us All
"One cannot level one's moral lance at every evil in the universe. There are just too many of them. But you can do something, and the difference between doing something and doing nothing is everything."?Daniel Berrigan "We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth". Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those, who having eyes, see not, and having ears, hear not..? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it might cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know.. it "" now." Patrick HenrySince the events of September 11, 2001, the U.S. Government has pursued its "war on terror"? on two fronts. The obvious one is the military front, which has taken American soldiers to battle in places like Afghanistan and Iraq; less obvious is the financial front. The government has instituted a strategy of tracking and freezing money internationally as a way to stem the flow of the "terror-dollar"? which it sees as the "lifeblood"? of terrorist operations.1 Thomas Naylor, a McGill University professor and author of Satanic Purses: Money, Myth and Misinformation in the War on Terror, accuses the U.S.
CDOh No!
It was not a good omen. This week Lewis Ranieri, a pioneer of mortgage securitisation in his "Liar's Poker" days at Lewis Ranieri, sold his property-financing firm because the subprime crisis had cut it off from fresh debt. If the industry's godfather can't navigate the storm-tossed markets, what hope its greedy children? Banks that a few months ago were falling over each other to underwrite mortgage-backed securities and the labyrinthine pooling structures, known as collateralised-debt obligations (CDOs), that sit atop them, have admitted to more than $30 billion in losses. That figure is set to rise sharply as mortgage defaults in America climb. Citigroup estimates that big banks may be facing $64 billion in write-downs, excluding its own figures — and it was one of the top two underwriters of CDOs.
