Consumer Reports: Get rid of unwanted mail

Did you know that more than 53,000,000 trees are used each year to produce paper catalogs alone? Factor in junk mail and unsolicited credit-card offers, and the waste keeps growing.

What few people realize is that you can opt out and choose not to receive catalogs in the mail. You can even end those seemingly endless credit-card solicitations. Consumer Reports' www.GreenerChoices.org says stopping the mailbox deluge is easier than you might think.

The Direct Marketing Association, which includes companies that send you catalogs, must take you off of their mailing list if you sign up for their "mail preference service." That includes subscription offers sent by companies such as Consumer Reports.

All it takes is $1 and a click of a mouse. You can go to www.DMAConsumers.org, then click on "remove my name from those lists." There, you'll find the one-page form you need to fill out to cut off the flow.

London stations: 'Moyles on the run'

Bauer's Magic has now been the most popular London commercial station in terms of reach for four quarters in a row. However, in terms of market share it was narrowly beaten by Heart, by 6.2% to 6.1%.

"We are delighted that Magic is number one again in reach - to have that accolade for four quarters in a row is no mean feat. It is a long time since a station has done that in London," said Steve Parkinson, the marketing director for Bauer Radio - previously Emap Radio.

Cell phone numbers up for sale

Three U.S. senators are pushing a bill to protect more than 250 million consumers from having their cell phone numbers listed in a 411 directory similar to directories available for residential phone numbers.Prospects of a cellular phone directory have raised fears about a flood of telemarketing via wireless calls and text messaging. While the Federal Communications Commission says those fears are unfounded, there are other privacy concerns at stake. The wireless industry says it has no intention of creating such a directory, although it once did plan to do so.But the bipartisan authors of the Wireless 411 Privacy Act say they dont want to take any chances, and they note that numbers are already available in at least one online directory service that has 90 million cell phone records.I think this is something we want to nip in the bud and say, You wanted to do this, and now you dont.
