Flames snap streak with Wild win

David Moss and Huselius scored for Calgary, with defencemen Brent Burns and Kurtis Foster responding for the Wild.

Calgary goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff and Wild counterpart Nicklas Backstrom each finished with 29 saves.

After scheduled starter Josh Harding tweaked his groin in the warm-up, Backstrom was told he was getting the start just five minutes before the puck dropped.

"It wasn't easy, but you can't think too much about that," Backstrom said. "You need to step up and try to help the team, be there for the team when they need you. You can't hide behind that or find excuses. You have to go out there and play your best."

After a scoreless first, the action picked up in the second. Kiprusoff was tested by Brian Rolston's slapshot from the left faceoff circle.

A 'Bradley Effect' for Blacks?

He might call and say, "What about this?" He makes suggestions: "I'd like this, I'd like that." I'm free to say I think that's a bad idea. But he is my boss so I have to defend it.

That explains a lot. ... 12:35 P.M.

Kucinich Bows Out with Dignity, Bangs Anti-War Drum

Protein Solutions subject of two more odor complaints

With the change in the season, houses will be more shut up,'' he said. "The winds will shift to northerly and the odor will bother someone else other than me.''

Johnston said there have been other times when the odor from Protein Solutions has been noticeable, but that he did not think it would rise to the level where enforcement action was needed.

"This one time on Oct. 18 I thought it might," he said. "But, if they got there 24 hours later, it might not have been at the actionable level when they got there."

After the petition was filed, Joplin City Manager Mark Rohr met with officials of the company, which agreed to provide periodic information to the city about its effort to correct or diminish the odor problem.

Matt Wojnowski, assistant to the city manager, on Wednesday said the company has kept the city abreast of developments at the plant, which is operating in the former Herrod Packing Co.

Canada's oldest bookstore is closing in Halifax

Canada's oldest bookstore will close its doors for good at the end of March.

The Book Room on Barrington Street in Halifax opened for business in 1839 and survived two World Wars and the Great Depression, store president Charles Burchell said in a release.

But the retail store couldn't outlast big box bookstores, Burchell said, nor the ease of ordering books online, competition from book selling pharmacies and grocery stores or the pressure to lower prices to reflect a stronger Canadian dollar.

Burchell said The Book Room will begin "an orderly shutdown of its retail store and dispose of its inventory" over the next few weeks. The company's wholesale operation will continue.

"I am extremely disappointed to make this announcement as The Book Room has been an institution in Nova Scotia," he said.
