Mayor Mounce: Redevelopment meeting 'waste of time, money'

The city could also use low-interest loans and other incentives to spark redevelopment.Critics of the process — few have emerged recently in Lodi — say it takes property tax revenue away from schools and other local services. They also contend that cities tend to mismanage the extra money they collect, spending it on projects that don't have a direct benefit on residents in the redevelopment district.City leaders are now collecting ideas from the public about what kind of projects they want, should redevelopment be approved this summer by the City Council. The state will make up the difference in revenue to the schools, City Manager Blair King said Thursday night.Asked how she would change the city's outreach efforts, Mounce said she'd like to see both sides of the redevelopment argument presented. She emphasized that she doesn't want to get rid of outreach or meetings, but change their focus.Among her questions: How much would redevelopment bonds, with their interest, cost a city over their lifetime? How will future generations pay for those costs? And, how many redevelopment projects can the city truly afford to take on?"We would only be fair to our citizens if we showed both sides," she added.Contact reporter Chris Nichols at chrisn@lodinews.com.

As a veteran of the Korean War, James Djerf, 76, feels John McCain is the right man to lead the county as president.

"The only thing I hear complaints about is his stand on immigration," Djerf said, adding he chalks that up to McCain's proximity to the Mexican border in his home state of Arizona. Djerf is supporting him just the same. He likes McCain's directness. "He's a straight shooter, he talks straight from the hip. I like him as a man."

Djerf got to meet McCain during a local campaign stop and even had his picture taken with the senator, along with a group of other area veterans. He has helped out the campaign by putting up signs and talking to people about why he feels McCain is the best man for the job. Wearing his Air Force jacket and hat, Djerf held up a McCain sign in front of the Hampton polls Tuesday.

Health worker jailed for abusing girls

His crimes were committed between December 2005 and August 2006 because of "emotional neediness and intoxication'', following the drowning of his young daughter and his separation from his partner. He had also been abused as a child, first when he was six by his father's friend and again as an 11-year-old by his soccer coach, Justice Southwood said. "As a result of the traumatic events in his life the offender used cannabis, of course he became dependant on the drug,'' he said. "It is probable that he was significantly depressed ... it is likely the offender sought contact in sexual behaviour to deal with the stress.'' The man's various afflictions meant he was detached from his usual sense of responsibility, he said. Share this article What is this? .

GALEN HOLLEY: A visit to where 'the light entered the world'

In Manger Square, a few kilometers from the bustle of Jerusalem, evening wafted down, fog-like, as a thin, cerulean head scarf - over the bone-colored stones of the Church of the Nativity, and into the crevices of the cobbled streets.

I tucked in my scarf and removed my glasses.

Behind me, a vendor with a swarthy mustache, his white garments shimmering in the breeze, was chopping onions. The wooden "click" of his cleaver echoed through the square. The air was thick with the exotic scents of middle eastern cooking - cumin, tumeric and sumac - as well as things less appetizing, like vehicle exhaust and the unclean, wild disquietude of caged fowl.

A young Jewish boy emerged from behind a pillar. He was seven, perhaps eight, in chalky clothes, with caramel skin and full, charcoal hair.

3 held for assault on GMCH doctor

Now that the forensic lab and the police has cleared his name, injustice caused to him cannot be undone, but exemplary punishment should be given to the guilty who misled the police into his case", said a close relative.

Trauma that Gurnam Singh had to underwent could be judged from an instance when the psychologists, working with CFSL experts, had stated last year that he was in a state of "shock" thus they could not carry out his lie-detector test. They had even asked his attendants to console him.
