By Richard BurnetteSOUTH FLORIDA SUN SENTINEL Sunday, July 22, 2007 ORLANDO, Fla. — It was a no-brainer for Jim Gilkeson when he found an Internet bank offering a money-market account paying five times the average interest rate offered by conventional banks. He moved $10,000 into the online account two years ago and has earned at least twice as much on his money to date as he would have if he had gone with the best conventional rates available, he says. ''The yields they offer are so much better,'' said Gilkeson, a finance professor at the University of Central Florida. ''And the regular, brick-and-mortar branches haven't been very generous at all with their rates.'' .

Feds shut down telemarketer in fraud investigation
LARGO, Fla.— A telemarketing firm accused of using murky promises of discounts and free vacations to trick thousands of consumers across the nation out of millions of dollars was temporarily shut down Wednesday, federal officials said. The Federal Trade Commission took action against Strategia Marketing Inc., also known as Suntasia Marketing, following a federal judge's temporary civil injunction. The judge also froze the assets of the company and its executives and allowed federal regulators to inspect and copy the company's business records. According to federal civil court records, more than 5,000 people complained to authorities that the telemarketing firm, operating under at least 15 business names, used deceptive and confusing sales tactics to get consumers to reveal their bank account information.
